The Time in Tenerife

So, when is the best time to visit?

Tenerife enjoys subtropical climate with warm weather and little precipitation. The best time to visit it is in late spring and early autumn, but it must be noted that the weather varies even on the island itself, between the north and the south coasts. South coast is where most resorts are located and the summers are hotter than in the north, where the climate is also more humid.

During the months of April, May, September and October, the temperature is about 24°C and the hotel prices are more affordable than during the high season. In those months there are less people around, so you can enjoy the island, rent a car and visit small villages, pristine beaches and benefit from the privacy that the island has to offer. The best time to visit Tenerife is in May during the Holy Week before Easter, where various festivities take place.

Summer in Tenerife

Undoubtedly the summer season is the peak season on Tenerife, when the temperatures reach up to 27°C and the sea water temperature up to 24°C. Considering that the island is visited by about 6 million people annually, more than half of them come during the summer season, especially in August. There is very minimal, if any rain during the summer, and due to refreshing monsoons, the heat is bearable and the sun is gentle. This is the time when hotel accommodation rates are at their peak, and you must book in advance. Visitors must keep in mind that hotels, as well as cafes, restaurants and beaches may get crowded mostly in August, especially on 14th and 15th August, when locals celebrate the day of the Saint of the Canary Islands. There are several other festivals in the summer that attract more tourists than usual - in mid-June there is a famous festival of Corpus Christi, where locals make carpets made from flowers and lay them out on the streets. In July there is a religious holiday of Holy Carmen, when the best chefs prepare traditional paella and everyone is invited to taste it.

Winter in Tenerife – festivals time

Even though winter on Tenerife is quite warm, though there is more precipitation than during other seasons, the best time to visit the island is at the end of January, when the De Musica de Canarias music festival takes place. In February visitors may witness the fantastic Mardi Gras Festival, which is similar to the Carnival in Brazil. This is when the whole island is taken over by the carnival fever and there are theatrical and musical concerts and street entertainment everywhere, especially in the capital – Santa Cruz de Tenerife. This fiesta lasts a couple of weeks until the beginning of Lent.

Quite often people call Tenerife as the ‘island of eternal spring’, and it reflects its pleasant climate throughout the year. Deciding on when to go to Tenerife might be challenging, as every season has its benefits, or carnivals, or other interesting prospects, such as affordable hotel accommodation that attracts tourists from all over the world.
